SAPS flounders in the face of riots and looting

13 July 2021 – For immediate release

"Saps contacted me, and the security companies contacted me, asking for ammunition, and I gave them about ten boxes of shotgun shells, and about 200 rounds of 9mm, by nine o'clock it was finished, and they asked me again..." These were the words of a voice note by an unidentified resident of KZN around July 12th, 2021.

The voice note continues to describe efforts to arrange more ammunition for SAPS, sponsored by private citizens. In a graphic account of 48 hours of mayhem the speaker documents the trail of violence and destruction in KZN, telling listeners how private citizens had to stand together to protect the SAPS station at Amanzimtoti. Most chilling was the prediction that the violence was set to escalate and that intelligence sources in the community were suggesting that specific groups had been earmarked for attack. Videos and reports of mobs attacking residential neighbourhoods suggest that it is not only organised business that is targeted, but private people in their homes too.

"It is unsurprising that in the face of what is happening to private businesses and assets and while law-abiding citizens are threatened, intimidated and attacked, and while communities burn the government and the anti-gun lobby are silent on the firearms amendment bill which seeks to disarm private citizens," said Jonathan Deal, National coordinator of Safe Citizen.

"The events that have unfolded in our country, and which continue today demonstrate the complete inability of the government to keep its citizens safe and establishes a prima facie case for the lawful possession of private firearms for the exact purpose of self and private defence.

Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety for Safe Citizen emphasized that citizens have a birth right to defend themselves and any other person who faces an unlawful and life-threatening attack. "It is irrational to suggest that South Africans be denied effective personal protection, when Ministers are safely protected behind a wall of VIP officers."

"The silence of the anti-gun lobby is deafening."
